The event is part of the museum’s programme In My Language, which aims at welcoming guests to Hafnarborg in various languages, thus making the museum more accessible to people of different backgrounds. The programme is supported by the Museum Fund.

Jónína Guðnadóttir (b. 1943) has long been one of Icelandʼs most prominent ceramicists, being a pioneer of using clay as material for independent artworks. The development of her exceptional imagery indicates a sound knowledge of clay and a singular perception of form and creativity. Jónína studied art at the Icelandic College of Art and Crafts and Reykjavík School of Visual Arts, going on to graduate from Konstfack, University of Arts, Crafts and Design, in Stockholm, where she studied ceramics. This retrospective presents an overview of Jónína’s career, spanning decades and a wide range of works, including practical items that she made early on and new artworks, created in the last year.

Þór Sigurþórsson’s (b. 1977) works are in many ways a collection of suggestions – pointers – that lead viewers on their own journey of discovery. Þór often works with found objects or other seemingly mundane items that he puts into new context, drawing lines of intersection across time and space. Using material that contains remains of time, of repetition and cyclicity, of procession, the artist turns our understanding of everyday items upside down. We instead encounter subtle visual poems, where experience, perception and execution hint at our fleeting world in an enigmatic manner.

Free entry – see you at Hafnarborg.

Saturday February 17th at 2 p.m., we invite you to a guided tour in English of our current exhibitions – Tidemark, a retrospective of works by Jónína Guðnadóttir, and Pointers, featuring new works by Þór Sigurþórsson.
