The exhibition focuses on art as a process and its inner logic to connect, not only to us, the viewer, but also to its surroundings. The participating artists are Anna Hrund Másdóttir, Birgir Snæbjörn Birgisson, Danny Rolph, Ingibjörg Sigurjónsdóttir, Joel Tomlin, Kristinn Már Pálmason, Peter Lamb and Vanessa Jackson. Linger is curated by Birgir Snæbjörn Birgisson and Mika Hannula.

Linger is when we tend to stay longer because of a reluctance to leave. That reluctance is often driven by a wistful longing, even though we don’t necessarily know why and what it is that we long for. What we know is that we must linger. The exhibition poses several questions about what happens when we are confronted with works that demand us to engage and be affected. Works that in their innocence and intimate situation are risk-taking.

The participating artists use different means and techniques to approach these questions. Anna Hrund and Ingibjörg work with found objects and material, that when taken out of its original context find a new ephemeral lightness of being. Rolph and Jackson’s works adapt to the space and situation, allowing the geometric abstract elements to take charge. Birgir Snæbjörn and Lamb use images from photographs, using the multi-layered process of reproduction to attain the unattainable. Tomlin and Kristinn Már’s symbols and shapes, when put together, become a language in its own right. All eight artists share the belief that art is a finding place – not a hiding place – and their works urge us to linger.

The exhibition is accompanied by the publication Linger, featuring essays by Mika Hannula. Edited by Birgir Snæbjörn Birgisson and designed by Sigrún Sigvaldadóttir, the book is published by Hunang with support from The Icelandic Visual Art Copyright Association and Hafnarborg.

Free entry – see you at Hafnarborg.

Friday February 21st at 6 p.m., we invite you to the opening of Linger, an exhibition featuring works by eight artists from England and Iceland.
